Out of a historical genre of memoirs or hagiography (the cult of jacques Bainville) and a popularizing academic history rooted in the counter-revolutiuonary tradition (Pierre Gaxotte), there emerged a more novel form of history. Diffusely articulated and lacking any strictly doctrinal project, it developed around such striking figures as Raoul Girardet, Phillipe Ariès, and Emmanuel Beau de Loménie. Amongst these three groups, one can discern mediations linking M. Mourre to J.-F. Chiappe, and passing through J. Carcopino, J. Laurent, F. Bluche, G. Comte, G.-C. Picard, M.M. Martin, and V. Nguyen.
